How to Calculate Chronological Age
Chronological age is the exact amount of time that has passed from your birth to a given date. Unlike simply subtracting birth years, calculating chronological age requires accounting for months and days, including leap years.
The Formula
To calculate chronological age manually, you start by subtracting the days, then months, then years. If the days result in a negative number, you borrow a month (converting it to the number of days in the previous month). If the months result in a negative number, you borrow a year (converting it to 12 months).
Why It Matters
In educational settings, chronological age is used to determine eligibility for certain programs and to interpret standardized test scores. In medicine, especially pediatrics, dosages and developmental milestones are strictly tied to chronological age in months and days.
